Let us understand the term RPA by breaking it into two parts.

The 1st part is Robotic and the 2nd is Process Automation.

Robotic- The word Robotic is derived from Robot which is essentially a machine that can replicate human activities

Process Automation- Use of technology to automate complex steps of a business process.

So fundamentally, RPA refers to software programs/solutions that automate complex business processes by automating human activities. Implementing RPA solutions allows organizations to achieve efficiency in the shortest possible time. RPA allows organizations to achieve scale by augmenting manual effort with software robots or BOTs as they are commonly called.

Essentially there are two types of BOTs: Attended & Unattended

Attended BOT :

Attended RPA bots are software bots which are activated by employees whenever they are needed the Robotic Process Automation to be executed on a business process.

Unattended BOT :

Unattended RPA bots are the software bots which will be scheduled, or as triggered by logic in the process flow automatically without any manual intervention.

Depending on the need of the business or user, a BOT can be deployed on Cloud or on-premise.

As per Gartner's Magic Quadrant, the leading RPA product companies are - UiPath, BluePrism, Automation Anywhere, Microsoft & Nice.

Applications of RPA

Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is the ability of a software to perform a pre-programmed repetitive task but with efficiencies many times higher than a human resource. RPA reduces cycle times, improves per-employee productivity and eliminates common error sources.

Some of the common applications of RPA include:

  • Data Entry and Migration

  • Customer Service

  • Financial Reporting

  • HR and Payroll

  • Invoice Processing

  • Healthcare

Live BOT in Action

Here is the video of an actual BOT in action - https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=aMxJKRzFm-g. This example covers the automation of the Accounts Payable process.

The BOT extracts invoices from the email. Thereafter extracts the relevant information and enters it to SAP's Account Payables screen. Finally, the BOT creates the bulk payment file for entry into the banking system.
